Key
Ingredients in Formula for Digestion
Artichoke (Cynara Scolymus)
leaf is listed as an approved herb in the German Commission E Monographs
that has been shown to act as a choleretic, a substance that increases the
formation and flow of bile to and from the liver. A decreased bile flow is
a common cause of digestive disturbances including fat mal-absorption,
excessive flatulence (gas), bloating after eating, constipation, and
diarrhea.
In a study with 553 patients with various
disorders including dyspeptic discomforts (gas, bloating, intestinal
cramping), gall bladder attacks, and severe constipation, artichoke
extract consumption has helped to regress the above disorders on average
of 70.5% in only 6 weeks of treatment. In another study of patients
suffering from abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, lack of appetite,
and nausea, artichoke extract produced improvement in 65% to 72% of
patients after one week and 80% to 92% after six weeks.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
is one of the best-studied carminatives (a group of herbs that are known to
aid digestion both by stimulating the release of digestion enzymes, by
soothing the gastrointestinal lining, and by relaxing the linings of the
stomach and small intestine, making it easier for gas to escape).
Peppermint is
recommended by the German E Commission for indigestion.
Chamomile (Matricaia scolymus)
is used widely as a digestive aid, especially in Europe. It is
carminative, meaning it soothes the gut wall, easing pain and the
production of gas. Chamomile’s bitter stimulation promotes a secretory
response that helps digestion. According to David L. Hoffman, M.N.I.M.H,
in an article on peptic ulceration appearing on Health World Online, the
anti-inflammatory action of chamomile on the gut lining and its
anti-microbial action are also helpful, as is the increase in blood flow
to the digestive system following chamomile ingestion.
Ginger (Zingiber offcinale)
has a long history of use as a digestive stimulant. Ginger has no side
effects and has the ability to provide aid for nausea and vomiting. Ginger
has been shown in some studies to enhance intestinal lipase activity
(helping to break down fats) as well as that of the enzymes sucrase and
maltase. The German Commision E states "no adverse effects’ in its
ginger monograph.
Pancreatine Enzymes help to
breakdown fats, proteins and carbohydrates into smaller particles, thereby
increasing nutrient absorption and utilization of food. Pancreatine enzymes
are a combination of protease, amylase, and lipase. Protease enzymes,
secreted by the pancreas, function in digestion by breaking down protein
molecules into single amino acids. Amylase enzymes break down starch
molecules (carbohydrates) into smaller sugars, and lipase, along with
bile, function in the digestion of fats. Deficiency of lipase results in
mal-absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. The plant enzymes of
Bromelain founded in pineapple and Papain founded in papaya also help to
support the digestive system. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) promote the
growth of beneficial and friendly bacteria in the intestines. FOS
(sometimes called prebiotics) is not digested by humans. Instead, it feeds
and increases the friendly bacteria (Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli) in
the colon while simultaneously reducing the colonies of detrimental
bacteria.
The B Vitamins are necessary
for proper digestion, absorptions of nutrients, and formation of red blood
cells.
