Concerned about high cholesterol and triglycerides?
You are not
alone. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in America.
High cholesterol and triglyceride levels often indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular
or heart disease. The American Heart Association’s
Cholesterol Education Program recommends that people maintain low levels
of LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol (also known as "bad" cholesterol)
since high
levels may be a factor in
cardiovascular disease.
Cholesterol and
Triglycerides
Cholesterol and triglycerides are two forms of lipids, or
fats. Both
cholesterol and triglycerides are required by our bodies. Cholesterol is
needed for building cell membranes and for making several critical
hormones. Triglycerides, which are chains of high-energy fatty acids,
provide much of the energy needed for cells to function.
A key function of the liver is to ensure that all the tissues of the
body receive the cholesterol and triglycerides they need to work
properly. The liver places the cholesterol and triglycerides,
along with certain proteins, into spheres called lipoproteins. These
lipoproteins are released into the bloodstream and are delivered to the
cells of the body. The cells remove the cholesterol and triglycerides that
they need from the lipoproteins.
LDL and HDL
Cholesterol
LDL, or low density lipoprotein, is known as "bad" cholesterol and HDL,
or high density lipoprotein, is "good" cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in the blood comes from LDL. Only a
small percentage is from HDL. Therefore, the total cholesterol level in
the blood is usually a reflection of the amount of LDL cholesterol.
When your LDL (or bad) cholesterol level is too high, the LDL can stick
to the lining of the blood vessels. This sticking process can lead
to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Plaque associated with
atherosclerosis causes the arteries to narrow, and can lead to heart
attacks and strokes. Therefore, a high LDL (bad) cholesterol level is a
major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. HDL (or good)
cholesterol, on the other hand, seems to be protect against heart
disease. There is some evidence that the HDL cleans the walls of
blood vessels, removing excess cholesterol.
