For many years scientists have pondered the
seeming paradox that the French population consumes a diet high in fats
yet has relatively low levels of cardiovascular disease. The answer in
part appears to be related to the relatively high consumption of red wine.
Now scientists have identified a compound in red wine and other plants
that may account for the positive impact on health. The compound is called
resveratrol. Research is still in the early stages but resveratrol is
showing great promise for positively impacting age-related health
conditions. Clinical trials are currently underway in areas such as
diabetes management and cardiovascular disease.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School and
the National Institute on Aging found that resveratrol in high doses let
mice eat a high fat diet yet avoid health problems commonly associated
with obesity. The liver and other systems of these obese mice remained
healthy and fat-related deaths dropped 31% for mice fed resveratrol.
Another study showed less weight gain in mice fed resveratrol, greater
physical endurance, and better insulin sensitivity. Resveratrol also
demonstrated the ability to increase life span in yeast, mice, and certain
fish.
Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant. One
scientist referred to it as "one of the best free radical
scavengers." This may account for its beneficial effects. Free
radicals are produced naturally by the body and can damage healthy cells.
In addition to the antioxidant properties of resveratrol, our formula
includes red wine extract and grape seed extract which provide polyphenols.
Polyphenols are believed to also have antioxidant effects which may
positively impact cardiovascular health.
One of the most powerful antioxidants that
fight free radicals, grape seed extract is 20 times more potent than
Vitamin C, and 50 times more potent than Vitamin E. Grape seed extract has
shown that it has many powerful benefits. In mice, grape seed extract has
been shown to lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular function. It
also encourages the growth of healthy cells. In addition it helps protect
the body against kidney and liver disease.
